OUR STORY
Habitat for Humanity of Flathead Valley has been building strength, stability and self-reliance through shelter since 1989.
We’ve built 70 homes to date, representing 77 families, 109 adults, and 161 children.
In the beginning, our organization celebrated the construction of one home per year. This was a major accomplishment given the limited resources and many challenges faced. Over the years, donated land and funding has allowed Habitat of Flathead Valley to continue to purchase lots and build in Whitefish, Columbia Falls, Lakeside, Somers, and Kalispell. The Affiliate is building 2 – 4 homes per year, but building construction capacity to do more.
In the early years, many of the volunteers were from construction companies who gave of their time and expertise.
Today, the construction of each house is made a reality with the help of devoted community donors and volunteers. Individuals, families, businesses, organization, churches – residents inside and outside of the Flathead Valley support us with their time, donated in-kind resources, and financial support.
In 2001, we opened the Flathead ReStore. It is now a significant financial bridge to support the costs of construction of our Habitat homes.
Every purchase and donation funds Habitat for Humanity’s affordable housing projects right here in our community. It's our way of keeping home goods and appliances out of the landfill, while funneling much-needed funds back into the community by providing conscious consumers with quality items at discounted prices.
The Flathead ReStore has increased community awareness about Habitat’s mission and vision, as well as the struggle to find decent, affordable housing in the Flathead Valley.
With the rapid population growth in the Valley, the need for affordable housing today has hit a new high.
Wages have not risen at the same level as home and property values. With the lack of affordable rental units being built and the limitation of family income, inadequate and substandard dwellings in the Valley continue to be common place today.

Building our future.
Our mission is to build decent, affordable homes and provide homeownership opportunities to qualified families who live and work in Flathead County. Every home we build helps keep Flathead County a place where working class people can continue to raise their families.
